About Cassata Ice Cream and How To Make it :-

The word Cassata is derived from the Arabic word qas’ah, which means the bowl that is used to shape the cake. When there was the rule of the Muslim dynasty, so the Cassata ice cream firstly came into existence in Palermo (a city in Italy) in the 10th century. The word “Cassata” was first discovered in Corleone (a small town in Italy) in the year 1178. 

Cassata ice cream is also known to be as Neapolitan ice cream, is a traditional cake type product from the side of Italy. Cassata ice cream has around toddy-like cake having filled with fruit juices or alcohol and its upper layer is made up of cottage cheese and fruits. Cassata ice cream has a casing of marzipan, pink and green colored food essence, and many people also decorate it with different types of decorative ideas. 

Nowadays, Cassata ice cream is not the same as earlier days, but many changes also came into existence as it may be of any shape(rectangle, square, triangle, etc) depends upon the customer choice and flavors too.

In India, cassata ice cream means a layered ice cream with a minimum of three flavors, usually pista flavor, vanilla flavor, chocolate flavor, and strawberry flavor, having the base of the cake-like product, decorative toppings with different types of nuts and dry fruits too. In India and many other countries, it is termed to be a Dessert Recipe.


Things that should be kept in mind Before Making Cassata Ice Cream


  1. Kindly Use homemade flavors or store-bought flavors for making cassata ice cream.
  2. You can shape the cassata ice cream in any of the ways as you wish, i.e, rectangular, circular, etc.
  3. If any layer of cassata ice cream is not ready then use a cold freezer to freeze it before adding the next layer on it.
  4. Prepare the pieces of cardboard and aluminum foil ( For wrapping it ) for giving the shape to cassata ice cream, shape as you want.

Ingredients of Cassata ice cream

( For serving for 5 Peoples )

  • 100 gram of Maida Flour
  • 1 litre of strawberry flavored ice cream
  • 1 teaspoon of strawberry eatable essence
  • 1 teaspoon of ghee
  • 2 eggs
  • 100 gram of sugar
  • 2 gram pista
  • 2 gram almonds
  • 1 cup vanilla-flavored ice cream
  • 2 gram cashew nuts
  • 2 gram walnuts
  • 50 gram of mixed fruit jam
  • 1 cup of chocolate flavor

Methods to Make Cassata Ice cream


Step 1: The first step is to prepare a base of cake by baking a cake in the oven. You can take a ready-made cake or cake base from the marketplace as well. 

Step 2: Then, Separate the yolks of the eggs and the egg-white substance from the eggs. Add 100-gram sugar to the egg yolks and mixes well. Then, add a teaspoon of ghee and mix again. Start preheating the oven at 320 F.

Step 3: In a separate bowl, add the egg whites to the maida flour and add the strawberry vanilla essence to it. Mix well.

Step 4: Then, add the egg yolk mixture to the egg white mixture and mix it properly. Drop this prepared mixture i.e., Step 1+Step 2  into the cake base tin and place it into a preheated oven for 5 minutes. If you find it is done, take it out from the oven and wait for the cooldown of the product.

Step 5: Place the cake on a cardboard and wrap it. Kindly Mix 1 teaspoon of mixed fruit jam with some drops of water and pour the water drop on the cake using a spoon.

Step 6: Add the strawberry-flavored ice cream to the cake top. Repeat the same with the vanilla ice cream flavor and chocolate ice cream flavor too. Now, Decorate the dry fruits (walnuts, cashew nuts, almonds, pista) as you want over it.

Step 7: Then, Gently slowly spin the cake. Wrap the cake tightly with the Aluminium foil paper and set down it into the cold freezer to become it cold and wait for some time. 

Step 8: If it is frozen, take it out from the cold freezer and remove the aluminum foil wrap. Now, the cassata ice cream is ready, and cut it down into slices as per your requirements and serve it and enjoy it.

Cassata Ice cream can be presented in many ways such as Some people and restaurants try it after meals or some people and restaurants offers to eat it simply as a dessert dish. Some people like its vanilla flavor, some likes chocolate, or some likes strawberry flavor, it totally depends upon the customer’s choice or his/her taste and preference. It is a very tasty and crunchy product, that win the Heart of many peoples since its beginning.
